If you’re a Dish Network subscriber who uses a smart TV or other device powered by Android TV, your life is about to get a lot easier. On Wednesday, May 2, Dish announced that the free Dish Anywhere app is now available on the Android TV platform.

Dish Anywhere has been available for mobile devices since 2013, letting subscribers watch live TV, their DVR records, and on-demand content on the go. It’s not limited either: 100 percent of the content available in your subscription is available via the app, so you don’t need to worry about the selection being restricted depending on where you are when you watch. The new Android TV app provides a 10-foot viewing experience, meaning that the user interface is readable and easy to use from your couch.

“Media players provide easy access to video content, so it’s no wonder one-third of U.S. broadband households own these devices,” Dish’s vice president of product management, Niraj Desai, said in a statement.” By expanding the Dish Anywhere app to Android TV, we’re giving our customers more ways to view their content on devices they already own, at no additional cost.”

In order to watch live, recorded, or on-demand content via Dish Anywhere, you’ll need a supported set-top box model. The Hopper 3, Hopper with Sling, and first-generation Hopper or compatible VIP receivers connected to a Sling Adapter are all supported. Even if you don’t have any compatible hardware, you can still watch on-demand content through Dish Anywhere, as long as you’re a current subscriber.

Supported Android TV devices including smart TVs running on the platform from Sony and Sharp, as well as media players like the AirTV Player, Xiaomi Mi Box, and Nvidia Shield TV. Dish Anywhere is also available on the Dish Evolve set-top box, which you’ll find in some hotel rooms. This is handy, as it lets you watch your DVR recordings directly on on the hotel room TV.

Agile approach needed to improve dish anywhere

I have used dish anywhere for several years. And I have been dismayed by the quality for the last 2 releases. A couple of years ago I had no issues with it. I used it on my iPhone and occasionally on my PC.
The iPhone side has lost quality and not kept up with the hopper 3 interface. I use my iPhone in landscape mode and the progress bar in that mode is completely useless. It never shows the information correctly. The bar is set as I start it up and never changes to fit landscape. The times are not correct either.
The tool also does not let me use folders in a way similar to the hopper 3. Very dissatisfying.
On my pc there are simply too many buttons to push to get it started. And sometimes you have to guess how to get there.
It also is not smooth. Even when I have been watching for a while it will simply pause for a few 10s of seconds and then restart. Gets pixely as well.
Finally when using the guide on my iPhone the buffers are not working well. After using it on several different shows the guide starts disappearing on the grid. Just goes gray
I have worked in the software industry and suggest that if you are not already doing so you should employ an agile approach. Works wonders.

Dish app

In my opinion is very poor. In the beginning it was good. Things obviously have changed it’s not consistent has a hard time staying on has a hard time connecting has a hard time just playing video. I’ve called customer service numerous times they tell me just to reinstall it I reinstall it and the same stuff happens. Very disappointed I was really looking forward to having this app and I’m not going to get rid of it because I do use it quite often it’s just too bad that they don’t stand behind their product and try to fix it. Sometimes I get the excuses that it’s my Internet ( which is kind of funny because I travel and I use different Internet so it just can’t be my one Internet because it’s multiple Internet ) sometimes I get excuses that it’s my equipment (which mind you they won’t admit that there’s anything wrong with their equipment either when it comes down to it). So I guess were stuck until maybe somebody in corporate has the same issues and gets a little frustrated too.

Lag and streaming is understandably frustrating. Streaming Live TV or DVR content from your receiver has a lot of moving parts. The programming first has to go into your receiver from a satellite, then uploaded to the internet, and then streamed into your device. If something within that system isn't working correctly, issues can happen. We recommend that you have a reliable connection at your receiver and at your device. A strong connection with a network bandwidth of 800 Kbps or better for SD, 4 Mbps or better for HD, will suffice.
If you have multiple devices connected and accessing the internet in your home, streaming can be slower than usual. The same goes for the connection on your device.
Double check these components and try streaming again.

I really like dish. Direct tv was getting really annoying so we switched. It has been so great. But, maybe to improve, you guys could make it so that you can have the option to just choose each channel you want, instead of having them come in packs? Because with each of the channels myself and my 5 other brothers and sisters, we all want different channels.
I really like the dish anywhere app because with all my siblings and me, it’s hard to get the tv. So I often use the Dish app. I can watch the tv on my phone!! 😎 But lately, I haven’t even been able to watch!! 😞
It is so glitchy, and takes such a long time to load, that it would be faster to wait till my siblings go to bed at 7:00 then to wait for the app to load. And I have 1 more thing that is included in every review, PLEASE FIX THE FAST FORWARD AND REWIND BUTTONS!!! I used to love this app but it just won’t work. So I usually have to just watch Netflix or prime video, until 7:00. Please fix these problems so I can rate this app 5 stars again.
