Hello r/anime! I've recently finished Hai to Gensou no Grimgar(or Grimgar of Fantasy and Ash), and truthfully I was expecting a 6/10 show with pretty scenery and a pinch of fan service. What I quickly realized was that while correct in two areas, I was very wrong in another. While the convoluted set-up plot and tragedy did distract from the overall presentation initially, the extremely well executed themes around dealing with loss and what follows is the most realistic depiction I've seen from anime(at least so far). Going through the party's stages grief added a much more sincere and tasteful side to this show than I anticipated. I also found the interactions of them warming up to Mary to be especially poignant in how they opened up to her. The drama and weighty action served as a good break between the more emotionally heavy parts keeping me engaged throughout. This paired with the stunning vignettes and relaxing ost, the show felt more about a cathartic journey than your typical action isekai. All together I believe it gets a solid 8/10(7.86 mal) and maybe even an 8.5. Anyway I'm just curious on what your thoughts were? The good? The bad? What would you rate it?
