There was something fun about scavenging around for a promo code though. It built up my anticipation for the new album. It reminded me how much I love his music. It also made the first listening experience that much more rewarding.

The year after that historic deal with Samsung, Jay-Z launched TIDAL in 2014. The reaction was a collective shrug. No one cared. I didn't give it any thought until his catalog disappeared from my Spotify library.

This was a huge disappointment. Spotify is the only app I’ve ever paid for with pride. Their monthly subscription provides ongoing access to most of my favorite music. Even Spotify’s design is stunning — that dark black with contrasting mint green. Gorgeous. All the little UX touches are magical too, like the way it buffers every song when you’re looking at an album. In case you want to jump to track 13, it’s cued up and ready to go.

In a 2014 Charlie Rose interview, Spotify’s CEO Daniel Ek admitted his competition was piracy. He had to create an experience that was better than free music. That explains why the UX is so immediate and gratifying. If he viewed iTunes as the competition, he would have built a mediocre app to be competitive. He wouldn't have risen to the occasion. Identifying piracy as the competition forced Ek to prove how great a streaming app could be.

Before Spotify, everyone thought Pandora was the height of streaming excellence. It's okay, but it doesn't let you listen to the exact song you want to hear when you want to hear it. It's a customizable radio channel.

As we transitioned into an on-demand culture, Pandora couldn't meet our listening needs. To their credit, they were the biggest digital music breakthrough since iTunes. If you look at the current iTunes interface, you can see over a decade worth of battle scars. That's why it's so unusable. iTunes has seen the fall of CDs, the rise of the digital single and now streaming.

In May of 2014, Apple acquired Beats Music. They took direct aim at Spotify with this acquisition. TIDAL launched that same year. Apple and Spotify have subscribers in the 10s of millions. TIDAL hovers somewhere around a million.

TIDAL’s Google search result reads “TIDAL · High Fidelity Music Streaming.” No one thinks of it like that and I’m sure almost no one cares about TIDAL’s sound quality. It should read “TIDAL · Jay-Z Wants A Bigger Cut.”

He almost pulled it off too. He figured out a way to earn the money that the streaming services denied him. That's why he's one of the richest rappers in the world. Now let’s see if he can do the impossible and make his fans feel like he still cares.

The release strategy for Jay-Z's new album, 4:44, was so confusing that even Snoop Dogg - who could presumably get Hov to hook him up with one phone call - turned to piracy.

'I wanna shoot a shout out to Jay-Z, just dropped another motherfuckin' hot album, 4:44,' he said.

'But you know what, I don't got Tidal so my nigga had to bootleg it to me. I'm on iTunes and shit coz I don't understand it y'all gotta explain it to me. I went to iTunes looking for his album and I couldn't find it. But my homie sent it to me you understand me.'
